the MAYWORKS festival presents THE LIVING CLOSET
7PM til late - Friday May 17th 2002
@ THE W.I.S.E. HALL, 1882 Adanac (and Victoria)
An evening of unbridled multidiciplinary arts
FEATURING:
Bad Feng Shui of Mediacore
Sight Unseen
Leah Abramson
Jean-Paul Fiket
Nettwerk's Jack Harlan
Andrea Papineau (host of Tales of Ordinary Madness)
Yael Wand
Raven
The bellydancing of Kazmira
And more...
With your host, the ubiquitous T.Paul Ste. Marie
rare grooves and sound by DJ DutchBoy...
all that AND a fabulous expanded open stage throughout the night
to vent your spleen in true Baudelairian fashion.

It's true, your local band of symphorophiliacs (go on, take a minute
to look it up) is at it again!
Having /just about/ recovered from our last event - one of our biggest blowouts
ever -
we're pleased to be finally putting on a show this year in conjunction at
last
with the Mayworks festival of working class culture (http://www.tao.ca/~mayworks/).
. . .
Beyond gracious hosting by the Pompadour of Power himself, T-Paul Ste.Marie
& sound solutions from DJ Dutch Boy, what can you be expecting from
this upcoming event?
* We are thrilled to announce that the dynamic KAZMIRA
will be once again deliciously entertaining us with her exquisite bellydancing.
With a new ring on her finger (congratulations, m'lady) and bells on her
toes,
there will always be music wherever she goes;
* BAD FENG SHUI, the diaper-wearing knob-twiddling misfit of Mediacore,
and
JEAN-PAUL FIKET, a man who loves the CBC, together again at last! This duo
swept us away opening the event last summer at the Grandview Legion, and
they're cooking sinister and ominous plans to do at least as much again
this time;
* GUITARS, GUITARS, GUITARS! Truly a machine that kills fascists.
Let me break it down for you:
- LEAH ABRAMSON! We loved her so much at the killer open stage last time,
we couldn't resist having her back with a set to make her own;
- YAEL WAND! Last heard bringing down the Planetarium with Antinomy's Song
at Seeing Stone Soup, her voice and song stylings will make you rend your
garments and howl for more. (Fortunately, more can be had of her at
Thundering Word Heard June 16th. Pass it on);
- Nettwerk's JACK HARLAN is a man we haven't featured in far, far too long.
Bringing a new meaning to the word "intensity", you can get a
preview taste
of his songs on his website at http://www.jackharlan.com/
;
- and of course we need at least one band on the bill. SIGHT UNSEEN doesn't
just fill that demand, it overflows it. This perennial favourite of figures
from distant Living Closet history features Jessica Oman, Lisa Mitchell,
and
Dr. Dan Lindenberger of Temple Labs.
* An expanded, staggered OPEN MIC throughout the course of the evening!
While it's all good to go out and take in information, we wanted to provide
the Mayworks festival with a forum where the people could give back and
share their thoughts with a receptive audience. You don't have to take
advantage of this resource, but it's here and available for you;
* While on the topic of open stages, ANDRIA PAPINEAU - host of what is now
Vancouver's longest-running weekly poetry series, Tales of Ordinary Madness
(Tuesday nights at Bukowski's) - has recovered from the bout of stomach
flu
that knocked out her plans to read at the last Closet. With fortitude and
a
strong constitution she's about ready to tell us a thing or three;
* And of course, there's so much more at every Living Closet that just can't
be boiled down to words, before or even after the event. Take in the
exhibition of artworks for all altitudes of brows! Quench your thirst at
the bounteous W.I.S.E. Hall bar, and don't rule out the possibility of
surprise performances - there are a few acts we weren't able to confirm
by
press time, but if there weren't unexpected amendments to the roster the
night of the event, it just wouldn't be the same. Chaos keeps us on our
toes, always living in the moment
(that moment being "I thought YOU knew what was going on!")
