History of the New Media Group:

The bulletin boards of area code 604 had a burning passion for computer music. In the wake of Skinny Puppy's activity at Nettwerk Records, all kinds of nerds sat bolt upright in their computer chairs and exclaimed "I could do that!" And, indeed, some of them could. The local hub for tracker music enthusiasts was Matt Ion's 1040 MIDI and Music BBS, and there was enough computer audio knowhow in the neighbourhood for a local company to take a stab at one of the all-time great PC sound cards with their Gravis Ultrasound.

From this milieu emerged seven crews:

• Digitallusions, a musical sole proprietorship initially powered by Admiral Skuttlebutt on an Atari ST, eventually transitioned to the guidance of Melodia, who continues making music great guns as Xennial
• Digitronic, aka Trideja, (Atari ST), a small cadre of friends with a minor interest in computer music and one, Simon, with an all-consuming frenzy to mint modules like they were going out of fashion. (Which, if you think about it, they probably were.) Highlights of their '90s output have been remastered and recently made available again.
• EuphoniX represented the Amiga raver contingent to the world courtesy of the AmiNet collections, eventually turning off the computers entirely and evolving into a leaner live PA crew.
• the Immortal Syndicate, a shadowy group of technically proficient demo enthusiasts who got caught up in producing tools for their scene activities.
• Sonic Equinox, a demo crew that quickly morphed into a computer music social club of sorts.
• and Mistigris, the all-purpose computer creativity community of area code 604, dedicated to pushing every boundary and exploring every archive.

All this was taking place parallel to intense music-tracking activity being conducted on The Pelvis of Elvis BBS and its DJNet echomail network by members of the Happy Fetus Records crew and its Radiance and Spice spin-offs. Also active in our very localized cyberspace were Jake Blues' 78 Records, The Synthesizers, and a bevy of independent local composers working in both MOD and MIDI formats, all of whose activities in the last century we look forward to enshrining and celebrating.

We lost the thread around the turn of the century, but in our absence the slack was picked up very capably by the Vancouver Chipmusic Society and the Bitcouver radio program on CJSF. The present and future are in good hands -- our primary concern is with the past.

We talk about cyberspace and area codes, but Mistigris activities are coordinated out of the ancestral, traditional and unceded territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and səlil̓wətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Sníchim-speaking Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓- and Halq’eméylem-speaking Stó:lō peoples and the ceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking sc̓əwaθən (Tsawwassen) Nation.
