But I had a good reason, really. You see, February is the shortest month of the year. And so I had less time to put out the zine. So I decided that I would be nice to myself and allow myself to be a few days late since February is a few days shorter than other months. See? Other than that... well I didn't get much response to the sendaway idea... Thought of making a Transient Lunacy Spiffy Soundtrack but didn't know if anyone would actually want to suffer through it. ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( --[Tone Deaf & Senile]-- by Radha-Vinoda dasa Howdy & welcome to the first installment of "Tone Deaf & Senile". Voi asked me a while ago if I would be interested in submitting reviews for the TL 'zine. There was one catch though, she wanted reviews of current stuff. Big problem...I don't listen to much current stuff. I hear new stuff here & there from friends & so on but nothing has really caught my attention lately. Instead I've regressed into the eighties (& sometimes even earlier) to dig at the roots of the thing that is called "industrial". Throbbing Gristle actually coined that term to name their own label when they started putting out stuff....oops I'm digressing...I'm senile remember. Anyways we thought it might be fun to let me ramble on about some old nuggets that I've been abusing myself with (or to). Ahhh but where to start....hmmmm. ...in a most unexpected place. The year is 1969. The artist is that sitar playing, curry munching, Hare Krishna chanting, Beatle guy, George Harrison. The album, "Electronic Sound". Long out of print & probably very difficult to find & most likely expensive because of rabid old hippies who will collect anything with a Beatle on it. They might buy it but they probably wouldn't listen to it. In fact not many people did. It bombed. Even in George Harrison's biography "Dark Horse" it is referred to as the "abysmal 1969 release". But ya know what, I like it. I like it a lot. It's abstract. It's noisy. It's weird. It's a stoned hippy playing with a moog synthesizer thinking that he's stumbled upon the next big thing. Maybe he did but it didn't catch on until Throbbing Gristle & groups of that ilk hit underground cult status with their electro bleeps & braps in the late seventies & early eighties. But old George's "Electronic Sound" remains forgotten. So if ya like primitive electronic experiments & can get hold of a copy by all means do it. If ya don't like it you can always rip off some Beatles collector geek. If you want to tape my copy (I don't think George even remembers this one, what to speak of being concerned about royalties & copyrights) leave me a message in the Deprogrammers message area. Lookit this, I got Zinnia to do a review... ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Raooul, "JailBait Core" / Skinned Teen, "Bazooka Smooth!" split LP Lookout!/Wiiija Records The riot grrrl split album is a fairly new but well-established tradition, tracing it's roots back through the collaborations of Wat Tyler/Helen Love, Bikini Kill/Huggy Bear, Bratmobile/Heavens To Betsy, Bratmobile/Tiger Trap and possibly many others. Raooul and Skinned Teen are the new generation of obnoxious punk rock girls. Their combined arsenal is: 8 15-year-olds, 6 skateboards, 3 vocalists, 2 guitarists, a dozen major-league punk rock connections, 100s of obscenities, and one whopping dose of attitude. Check them out. Raooul was (they've broken up) a slightly infamous East Bay quintet starring Maddy, Molly, Loren, Melissa, and Phyllis. In 1993, as 14-year-olds, they released an indescribably demented 7" called "Fresh and Nubile" which I'm sure will be remembered, by those who heard it anyway, as an underground classic. Their side of this album is, unfortunately, not nearly as insanely amusing nor as rebellious as their first release. Their sound has been watered-down somewhat, which is a pity, since they had the potential to destroy entire solar systems with their full-tilt, screechy, clangy madness. The two vocalists are still speed-screaming with alarming rapidity, the guitarist is still playing that one slightly fuzzy chord, and the bassist is still carrying the rest of the band, but the novelty has worn off a bit. I do get a kick out of "Miguel". It has these between-verse whine sessions: "`People are sheep.' `Yeah.'" "My family are so PC, we eat food and we burst and we peck it off the ground like all the other BIRDS" -- that can still make me laugh. Skinned Teen are 3 English girls a year or so older than Raooul. They are soft where Raooul is hard, and sophisticate the album a little with their abstract lyrics and hip-hop beats. Make no mistake -- neither band could be said to contain musicians, but Skinned Teen really are better than Raooul. Perhaps because they're older, or because they're not always striving for louder + ruder = punker. In any case, they've presented for us 8 very minimalist and enjoyable pop-punk pieces. The songs are all crunchy but very lo-fi, seldom escaping the realm of explosive drums + one-note-at-a-time guitar + rawly sung vocals. There's definite talent here, and the songs are well-crafted. They even employ a sample of French soccer commentators in the very good "ExBoyfriend Beat". Also good are "Starch", "Double D", "Geometry of Twigs" and "Pigeon Steps". And finally, as the token in-joke connecting these two very different bands, both Skinned Teen and Raooul include as their last tracks different versions of Raooul's old sexual bragging song "I Had Jesse Blatz". -Zinnia Rock- ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Now dust brings us multiple reviews, from the depths of his cd collection ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Okay, once again, it's time for me to write some reviews of recent CD I've acquired. Actually, I already did this once, but due to a freak act of nature, the review got messed up, so I'm back at the keys to perform my sacred (last-minute) duty to Transient Lunacy. First, though not a CD, I'd like to recommend Pulp Fiction to anyone who hasn't seen it. It's quite simply a first-class production in every way (and it's got wicked music ;). ARMAGEDDON DILDOS - Lost - Sire/Warner Bros. The latest release from Germany's Armageddon Dildos takes over where their 1994 cover of Morrissey's "Everyday is Like Sunday" left off. Lost toughens the sonic assault, while preserving the perverse sense of humour and unique synth programming skills hinted at on that release. Originally I was put off by the name, but after all, any band that likes Morrissey can't be all bad, right? (hmmmm...) Now I've grown rather fond of them. They were even nice to include one of the industrial Morrissey mixes on here for those of us who can't find the single. The Dildos are a product of Germany's Zoth Omoog label. This label, specifying in hard, dark techno and electro-industrial has some great bands on it, but the Armageddon Dildos are the only one to be distributed by a label as big as Sire/Warner (some of the others are on Cleopatra). It's easy to see why. Though the guitars are heavy, the vocals distorted and suitably evil sounding, and the lyrics merely utilitarian (since German is their first language), there is definite immediate appeal from their sound. They blend brilliant synth programming of digital and analog synths with guitars that never degenerate into the monotony of contemporaries like Ministry. Some of the appeal arises from the Dildos ability to act as a cipher for modern industrial. The guitars recall Ministry. The vocals skip easily from a Bill Leeb style growl to a Trent Renzoresque croon on the track "Too Far to Suicide" (which starts out sounding like "Sanctified" off Ninch Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine). Even the ghost of Einsturzende Neubaten is summoned, at least vocally, when the Dildos lapse into their native language (German) on "Haut" and "Germany", which for all I know may be more poetic than their English lyrics. It's of little signifigance that the Dildos aren't the greatest poets, since they temper their heavy electro sound with enough silliness to eliminate any questions of self-importance. The funk-industrial-rap of "Stay Home" is hideously cheesy, while not actually being bad music. The synth-bar-band blues-rock of "Uncle D." however is just plain brilliant at it's toying with the genre. My only real complaint is with the production. Often the guitars drown out the startlingly good synth bits. It wouldn't be that much of a complaint if these synth bits didn't sound so good. The Dildos sound, while not as polished as Front Line Assembly, beats that band by fostering a powerful style that might almost be described as groovy (what a concept for industrial, eh?). So, if you can take some cheesy distorted lyrics and a few heavy guitars this is recommended for any fans of the artists I've mentioned throughout the review, then you'll probably be using Dildos just about every day ;) 777 - System 7.3: Fire + Water - Caroline Before I start reviewing the CD, I'd just like to present my contempt for the Brilliant Box. These are those jewel-cases that fit two CDs in the same space as one. Unfortunately, they're made very badly, and my thirty dollar purchase (more with tax) is packaged in materials less durable than bubble wrap. Okay, rant mode off. 777 are a band with a lot in common with Orbital and the Future Sound of London. However, while those bands, who arrived on the scene at approximately the same time, have become household names in North America (or at least warehousehold names ;), 777 has been left out thanks to our good friends at Apple. You see, in Britain, where renowned session guitarist Steve Hillage and synth-guru Miquette Giraudy are better received, they are known as System 7. In North America though, Apple has that name copyrighted for operating system software, so 777 wasn't allowed to use it. So System 7 became 777, and the album came out in Canada and the US with different cover art. This same cover art was used in Britain for the second System 7 album which was titled 777. Since the first album was self-titled, this meant North American audiences could be confused by two different self-titled albums. The second album also used the cover art from the first British release. Peter Gabriel would be proud. A band trying to make a name for itself wouldn't be. Fortunately, this problem is solved on the latest 777 release. By using a version number never used by Apple, Hillage and Giraudy were able to incorporate both names without any fear of law-suits. So the album's title is 777: System 7.3 - Fire + Water. This is useful for identifying their third album too. Fire + Water is a double CD but both CDs are available seperately via import. When packaged together they form the dreaded "concept album" (oh no!). Fire is the dancier, harder edged stuff, though actually it's still pretty mellow compared to, oh, I don't know, Armageddon Dildos =) Water is the soothing, meditative ambient work. Of the two, Water is the more successful, since 777 seem more at home with evoking the mood of a psychedelic trip than keeping a dancefloor moving. The attempts on Fire are not without merit though. It's actually quite interesting that both CDs have virtually the same track listings, with the differences actually arising from the mixing. It's evident that this is an attempt at branching out for the band. Miquette does strange, beautiful things to her analog synths to generate tones that offer refreshment fromt the over abundance of 303ish sounds in ambient techno right now. "Alpha Wave" on Water is a rippling cascade of sound, with each tone contributing its own mood into a miracle of synth programming. The myriad of collaborations on the album furnish the CD with a variety of styles while still mantaining the feel of an album, which if you'll forgive me, seems ideal for the psychedelic state. The songs are dreamy, sometimes uplifting, often contemplative, and sometimes haunting as in the collaboration with French DJ/musician Laurent Garnier entitled appropriately "Sirenes". One of the high-points on the album comes when Hillage and Youth (of the Orb, and Killing Joke) collaborate to meld ambient with pseudo-mideastern flourishes on "Dr. Livingstone I Presume". "Mysterious Traveller" and "Overview" offer some of the best work Detroit Techno pioneer Derrick May has done in years. 777 even pull off a rave-able track in the form of Radiate, with the help of American rave DJ, Lewis Keogh. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm too warm on Hillage's attempts at working his admittedly skillful guitar playing into ambient. Fortunately, Hillage keeps the wanking subtle except on the otherwise very pretty Batukau, which sounds like some misguided attempt to sound like Pink Floyd and reinforces my theory that "guitar + concept album = progressive rock", shudder. Fortunately for us, the dreaded wank-o-fest is toned down for the mix on Water. The 777 lies somewhere between Orbital and label-mates The Future Sound of London (particularly their work as Amorphous Androgynous). 777 though, relies less on borrowed sounds than FSOL and this results in a cleaner sound, though one that lends their work a sense of composition rather than collage. For fans of intelligent dance/ambient music, this is a must. It's not the epitome of its genre but its work that warrants the deserved creation of a North American fan-base. BRAINBOX - Primordia - Nettwerk This is an interesting mix of techno-trance, and acid-jazz. For the most part it works very well, ocassionally working in mideastern motifs and very soulful guitar and percussion. Some of the live vocals are just too sugary for me, but I can live with them. There is some house derived cheese, but it's tolerable in context. Not really a must-have, but interesting as offering a fusion of two related genres. Fans of acid-jazz often complain techno isn't organic enough, while techno fans condemn the retro, often redundant groove of acid-jazz, so this is a nice compromise. And, hey, they're Canadian too!
