vancouver all-nite / late-nite eats
|
| |
where we define late-nite as, say, to 3 am.
I would say no chains allowed, but what I mean is let us proceed unencumbered by the shackles of denny's. I'm going to take this to the vancouver_eats livejournal community for amendment (+ ongoing update?) but want to bring a rigorous and substantial document to the table to begin with.
* denotes 24hr, else let us indicate typical closing hours.
so we've got our out-of-consideration kits group:
* "the naam" -- order late-nite, get served mid-morning.
* "the vineyard" -- seems like a much better idea from the outside than from the inside. kits is a long way to travel to to settle for this... even if yr just coming from dunbar.
* "calhoun's" -- to tell the truth, the feeling that I am outside their target demographic is so pervasive and influential that I've never been in, feeling an almost invisible bubble steering me away from its door at even 4 am.
original "benny's bagels" @ broadway + larch -- open late on weekends, in the summer, except when it's not?
there's the pho contingent:
* cambodian noodle soup @ broadway near cambie -- the proximity to the sha-lin noodle house is an exercise in situational irony, but they make a mean jackfruit milkshake if you can get past the neon decor and the fishtanks too thin for their occupants to turn around.
I am confident there are other late-night pho bastians, but apparently not along kingsway, where one might expect them. (perhaps further up, past victoria where I turn off?)
chinese?:
"wong kee" @ broadway + quebec -- not good enough that you eat where when you have other choices available, but at 2:30 am it's hard to go awry with an order of beef and broccoli. open to 3 am methinks.
the creepy place growing like a wart on the back of famous foods -- all right food, given the options available at that hour, so long as they don't completely overlook your order of congee (but still manage to bill you for it.) still, something tells you that the primary purpose of this establishment is not to serve food. Dunno how late it's open -- walking home from parties up kingsway well after midnight its "open" sign always flips off just as I pass it.
miscellany:
* bagel place (what kind again?) @ cypress + cornwall -- what I want to know is: bakeries of all stripes are active well before sunrise preparing the goods for the morning rush. but where else are they open to the public before breakfast time? 4 am december downpour access to a steaming hot, fresh bagel is a sign of how civilised Montreal has become after 500 years. How many more centuries do we have to wait before it can be found at more than a single location here?
* the e&b @ kingsway + victoria -- a front for something. likely a better place for after-hours beer off-sales than for food consumption, assuming their alcohol handling is more savoury than their food handling. achan can give you the full list of off-putting features of this establishment, but you may prefer to settle for the 10-page summary.
* super-valu at the mercato, commercial + 1st (+ I think a companion near Davie + Jervis): because sometimes, no matter how smashed or twitchy you are, the quality of restaurant food available is still inferior to what you might be able to throw together yourself -- or perhaps you've got a hankering for the one thing that can only be ordered after 10 am. the power is in your hands. the produce section is a lot less mouldy these days, too!
The Robson, Davie + Denman strips almost certainly warrant further investigation, belying a neighborhood with nightlife. (how late is the Granville Taco Time open?)
I remember a time there were 24-hr Subways, but do those exist anymore? (Are there any 24-hr Tim Hortons'?)
I suspect there are some (Knight & Day?) "family restaurant"s out along the trucking routes -- this list is tragically Vancouver-o-centric, but then again, so am I. Anyone who wants to is welcome to expand this list to other regional cuisines.
I'm also overlooking fast-food drive-throughs, fully outside of my non-driving experience.
and let us not forget our spiritual brother, Jay's cafe at the Husky stop in Hope. You want mediocre pie any time of the day or night? They're on it. (Just don't ask the other restaurant where it is.) It's exactly the distance away it takes to play two 45-minute sides of a mix tape, supposing you don't get caught in the black hole looping dead-end of the truck with the axe embedded in the hood.

I know what you mean about the mysterious repelling aura, but inside they're just a deli with candles. The food is pretty good. I was expecting it to be too hip and drunk for words, but no, they decorate with scarecrows.
bagel place (what kind again?)
siegels.
many nights I have wandered to 24-hr shopper's drug mart at 3am to buy boxes of chocolates, bad soda, or those gross pink wafers. I don't know why, but they're sure open.
I think the alberni timmy's is 24-hr..?
I bet there is some interesting 24-hour food at the airport. We should make a trip out at 3am some night, and chat up jet-lagged travellers.

Excellent to know! An oasis in hard times in the west side, since Benny's will never be quite the same again (the place practically haunted with ghosts of nostalgia.)
bagel place (what kind again?) -- siegels. I think the alberni timmy's is 24-hr..?
yes precisely! thanks for the specification

Whereabouts is that? Convenience stores of most ilk would likely qualify also, though perhaps we should start a sub-list of "places you can go to get things that you can eat" rather than "places you can go to eat"
I bet there is some interesting 24-hour food at the airport. We should make a trip out at 3am some night, and chat up jet-lagged travellers.
Or, uh, just pick JBH's noggin. I was thinking about that but somehow it ended up omitted from my final commentary.
I hear the Blenz at davie it 24/7.
I'm learnin' here!
the grind is still 24 hours, no?
ah yes, and almost certainly. whoops. (of course, it's more of a hot beverage establishment than a place to eat)
taiwan beef noodle house in marpole also claims to be, but maybe just for gambling
this demands further investigation.
If nothing else, I see this line of inquiry forming the basis of making issue 2 of the tabzine an excellent nocturnal resource. feel free to throw in any other 24-hr non-food-related establishments that come to mind, though likely all that can be done at them is the making of issue 2 8)

also worthy of consideration -- any pizza joints that make / deliver later in the night? sometimes it's taken until 2 am to just get all your characters generated and you want to get a solid hour of gaming in before disrupting the play for food.

I suspect not. I suspect they close around that hour. Perhaps even earlier.
Since you have the Vineyard on your list, quality clearly isn't a constraint, so I can suggest Hamburger Mary's.
Also, that that frites place on Davie. Fritz? I think it's open when the bars close.

okay, the website has 3 24hr shoppers in vancouver proper: 4th+vine, 885 w. broadway, and thurlow+davie, plus one in burnaby at old orchard, and one somewheres in surrey.

indeed - the purpose of the list is as much to dissuade from traps as it is to nudge towards holes in the wall. one bad milkshake can potentially turn people off the wonders of a 3 am supper permanently -- the field is so limited it tuns the risk of the entire rare breed being lumped into the same malignant category.

I think DV8 and Sugar Refinery are both great, but both have terribly erratic kitchens. You want drinks, sure, but food (like, TODAY, DV8 kitchen staff) depends on a number of time-independent variables. They're both totally on my 8 pm list, but I'm hoping for this to be a compilation of reliable, sure-fires (or guaranteed misses, as in the case of the vineyard, e&b, etc.) for 2 am. Most kitchens are closing if not closed by 11 pm and theirs often follow that pattern.
I'll be happy to investigate both of them, but I don't want to have nothing in the area to fall back on but Hamburger Mary's in the event of my finding them both no-more-fooding.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the place, but the one in the strip mall beside Tom's Video at Grandview & Renfrew is 24h. For description, see yer entry under Wong Kee.
> 24-hr Subways, but do those exist anymore?
As of this summer the one at Boundary and Henning (2 blocks south of Lougheed a.k.a. Boundary) was still 24h. I haven't been to any others recently enough to confirm that they still are, although for your investigation, these ones used to be at one point or another:
- on Pender between, uh, Howe and Hornby? (Somewheres in there, anyway)
- Hastings & Kaslo
- Fraser & (43rd? 45th?)
- Kingsway & Arcola (BURNABY alert!)
Also:
- McD's (barf!) drive-thrus (squared!) are often 24h.
- There is a slightly pricey (but not too bad) and reasonably decent "Italian" family restaurant (sorry, the name escapes me) that is (used to be?) open until 3AM; it's on Nanaimo a half-block south of 1st (or possibly Renfrew). Friends and I have taken refuge in their lasagnas at about 2:55 on several occasions before.
- Boston Pizzas (not that I'd ever intentionally steer anyone there) are generally open until 2AM, except where municipal bylaws prevent it (this obviously not including the City of Vancouver). The website can steer one to locations.

Most wendys are very late night, till 2:00am (but it varies by locations), there are lots of pizza joints open till at least 4:30am fri to sun's but I can't list them becasue I usually phone all of them in the yellow pages until I find one open, sun - thurs many are open until 1:30am.

I live on the robson/denman/davie area so my options are the numerous Korean Restaurants around hons/shenanigans area that are open untill 3:00am. Other than that almost everything else is closed by 2am except for the 'gay' denny's on Davie or a few coffee shops and a Timmy Hoe's on Alberni St.
I'm pretty sure Hamburger Mary's shuts down after 2am now..?
I'm all about the Korean places. There's one on bute x robson across the street from the Bread Garden that's open untill 3:00am i think. It rules tons of food for $10. There's another hugely popular one right beside hons and The Copper Onion that it always full of drunken Koreans untill 3:00am.
the award for most shady robson st. business is inside that Japanese market directly across the street from Shenanigans. You walk past the counter then up a staircase to a weird and totally hidden all night Karaoke bar with private rooms
Another all night place worthy of mentioning (that has food.. sometimes) is Hollywood Karaoke on Seymour street. Walk up stairs and tell me you do not feel like you just stepped into a bad chinese mafia movie.

I bet there is some interesting 24-hour food at the airport. We should make a trip out at 3am some night, and chat up jet-lagged travellers.
The only thing 24/7 @ the Airport is Timmy Hoes, 7-11 and Murder King. Everybody else is pretty much done at around 11:00pm
however, Richmond is chaulk full of 24hr cafes/restaurants. Like No. 88 or whatever restaurant in Landsdowne Mall, or the heaps of weird Tea Houses everywhere that serve that awesome giant toast with peanut butter on it and 'icys' which are basically an ENTIRE plate of crushed ice with flavoured something poured on it. A 24 timmy hoeZ and Knight x Day also make up the fold but for atmosphere you can't beat a weird Richmond tea house.
All the counterstrike bars in Richmond are 24/hr too with strange Chinese food.
The worst Restaurant is the Lu Lu Island bar w/shady 24hr sushi restaurant attached to it. Horrible service and completely full of Richmond gang members after 2:00am. No rules whatsoever so you can drink in there, smoke or do whatever all night.
the sickest food I've ever sampled was in The Monkey's Restaurant which is an all night gambling den masquerading as a restaurant right beside Fukuroku off 3rd in Richmond. I had this shit which was sugary, sticky gooey gluten balls floating around a syrupy sugary soup base. absofucking nasty

'gay' denny's on Davie
I ended up in that Denny's the after the first rave I ever attended. I was still in highschool, maybe 15, and we were broke and stranded downtown until Sunday morning transit. I, being ever so SMRT, decided to do LSD the night before the party and was subsequently up all of the previous night and day. So after much hoopla and ridiculous drama and shenanagins one of my friends and I ended up in Denny's on Davie at about 4am. First three guys in their late 30s tried to pick up my friend (I very non discreetly informed them that they were old enough to be her father and they were so embarresed they left it alone). Then a nice cute looking old man came in and sat across from us, ordered coffee and pie, and nicley sat in his seat while he shat his pants. It was definitley a night to remember.
