'Cyberspace: the Bagel Connection

Benny's Bagels is a Kitsilano original.  So is William Gibson.  It was while living in Kits that the American-born author introduced the world to his vision of a gritty post-industrial future, where the only escape is to a realm of intertwined computer netwokrs that Gibon labelled "cyberspace."  And it was from Kits that Benny's introduced Vancouverites to the idea that a bagel wasn't just a hard, funny-shaped bun.  Both were wildly successful; Benny's expanded to include shops all over town, while Gibson moved to Suaughnessy.  The only question that remains is, where exactly did Gibson develop his singular vision of a dystopic future?  One clue may come from the following bit from Gibson's 1993 novel /Virtual Light/:

"Now they were walking past this bagel place that had a kind of iron cage outside, welded out of junk, where you could sit in there at little tables and have coffee and eat bagels, and the smell of the morning's baking about made her faint from hunger."

Literary scholars might want to check out the Benny's on Broadway (2505 W. Broadway).  For those just looking for a bagel, the other Benny's are just as good.'  (following article supposes Philip K. Dick's February 1972 Vancouver visit (for a sci-fi con at UBC) as inspiration for the urban-decay/rain aesthetic of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?)
